Started in 1902 with Willis Carrier’s invention of modern air conditioning, Carrier is a world leader in heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration solutions. Today, Carrier® innovations are found across the globe and in virtually every facet of daily life. 

Being such a behemoth global organization comes with many challenges as well. One of them was managing and scaling the Software Development teams at Carrier. Today, we have Sumer Alhinnawi, Lexie Webel, and Ulla Held from Carrier who have had firsthand experience using Waydev. Let’s hear what problems they wanted to solve using Waydev and what they think about our product:

I would like to ask you some questions about the relationship between Carrier and Waydev, and I would like to know more about your roles at Carrier?

Sumer: Sure. We’re glad to be here and happy to help in any way we can.

Lexie: Yes, I’ll go ahead and start. My name is Lexie Webel. I’m an Associate Software Engineer at Digital Foundry here at Carrier. Now I’ll pass it to Sumer.

Sumer: My name is Sumer Alhinnawi. I work at Digital Foundry at Carrier and my role is Chief Scrum Master.

Thank you so much for this intro. What were the challenges you were looking to solve with a Development Analytics platform like Waydev?

Sumer: We were looking for a tool that will help us to understand, engage our developers, be able to see where some of the weak points are, be able to do some root cause analysis of the work our developers are doing, and learn their habits. 

In addition to getting a holistic view of the teams at Digital Foundry, we are scaling out at a very fast pace. We have multiple teams, multiple products that we are releasing and working on. So we were looking for a tool to help us grasp how each team was doing without having each one of us be in each meeting, or to go to the ceremonies, or to pull up charts and reports. 

What made you choose us? How has Waydev helped you solve your problems?

Sumer: Waydev was kind of like a one-stop-shop for us. It gave us an area to go in and see how the teams were doing. It pulled information from our apps – JIRA, Bitbucket, CircleCI. It did all this stuff that we know is accurate because data doesn’t lie. We wanted something that would be able to pull up information and also in a way that’s coherent, in a way that is visually very appealing, and Waydev gave us all that. 

On top of that, Waydev’s customer service is next level. Lexie and I had met with more than 10 or 12 vendors in this process of trying to see which platform we’d want to work with. And we felt that not only did Waydev offer the product that we were looking for, but they are very professional. They were very willing to go above and beyond, for their customers and just really awesome to work with. So, Waydev is definitely a tool that we will support and we will continue to work with, and we’re very excited to see what you have in store for us.

Wow, this is amazing! What are you expecting from us in the future? What would you like to see next in Waydev?

Sumer: At every point that we’ve come, where we wanted to see some new functionality or some bar, charts, dashboards, you have come through for us and said we will build it for you, just give us some time. You’d go back and then you come back a couple of days later and say we did it for you. So, honestly, I think we’re at a point now where we really are enjoying the dashboard and really finding it very useful for our metrics and for our leadership as well. 

A lot of the metrics that we’re getting from Waydev we’re plugging into reports that very senior leaders in our company are requesting other departments do as well. So, I’m sure as things expand out and they scale out to other departments, there’s going to be additional requests to say. Like can we see it this way? Or how are teams doing that? Or how can we do comparisons? But for right now, we are really loving the product. 

Lexie: Yeah, to be honest, Sumer covered it quite perfectly. Waydev is always so fast to add anything that we like, and, there’s really nothing that you haven’t added already. So we’re excited to see Waydev grow as technology grows every single day.
