Swarmia alternative

Waydev is built for the org Swarmia was not designed to reach

Both platforms read your engineering stack and both do DORA well. The gap opens at enterprise scale: deployment inside your own perimeter, source control beyond the big three, metrics you define yourself, and contributor-level visibility that Swarmia declines to provide by design.

If your engineering organization is large, regulated, or running a mixed toolchain, that gap is the entire decision. Request a free trial and see it on your own repositories.

10,000+active contributors supported on a single deployment
200+integrations across version control, tickets, CI/CD and chat
On-premself-hosted or cloud, your choice

Where the two platforms actually differ

A fair starting point. Most of the core is shared, so the decision lives in the two outer bands.

Six reasons enterprise teams pick Waydev

Deployment

Your commit data never has to leave your perimeter

Waydev runs cloud or on-premise, with self-hosted Git and ticketing integrations on the Enterprise plan. Swarmia operates as a cloud service. For banks, healthcare, defence suppliers and anyone with a data residency clause, this ends the evaluation before feature lists open.

Coverage

The whole toolchain, not the popular part of it

Azure DevOps, GitLab Enterprise, AWS CodeCommit and Gerrit alongside GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket, plus Jira, Azure Boards and ClickUp. Swarmia’s published integrations centre on GitHub, GitLab, Jira and Linear. Large organizations rarely have one clean stack, and the repositories a platform cannot read are exactly the ones hiding your bottleneck.

Customization

Metrics you define, not metrics you select

Write your own formulas, build dashboards from the widget set, and produce reports across large datasets. Selecting from a fixed library works until leadership asks the question the library does not answer.

Visibility

Contributor-level insight when you need it

Swarmia takes a deliberate position against measuring individuals and builds accordingly. Waydev gives you work log and contributor insights for understanding load distribution, onboarding progress and where knowledge is concentrated, with role-based access controlling who can see what. It is a real philosophical difference, and it matters most when a leader has to answer a specific question about a specific team.

Scale

Built for ten thousand contributors, not ten teams

Role and stats management, team-level permissions, SSO and SAML, and an open API that both pulls and pushes so engineering data feeds the warehouse and the board deck you already maintain.

AI

AI impact measured, not just AI seats counted

WAY AI agents and the Waydev AI Copilot surface where AI tooling is moving throughput, review load and quality, and generate targets and notifications from it. Adoption percentages are easy. Attribution is the hard part, and it is the part a CFO asks about.

Both tools will tell you your cycle time. Only one will do it inside your own infrastructure, across your whole estate, on metrics you wrote yourself.

Where Swarmia is the better call

Worth saying plainly, because a comparison nobody believes converts nobody.

  • You have fewer than ten developers. Swarmia’s free plan covers most of its standard features at that size, and no paid platform beats free.
  • You want a strictly team-level culture with no individual data in the system at all, and you want the tool to enforce that rather than trust configuration.
  • Your stack is GitHub plus Jira or Linear, you are cloud-first, and Slack-native nudges and working agreements are the workflow you want.

Inside Waydev

Four modules, one commit-level source, operated by your own leaders.

Delivery Pull Request Insights, DORA metrics, and cycle time split into coding, review and deployment so the costly stage is visible rather than inferred.
Health The DX module surveys your team and pairs the answers with delivery data, alongside team insights, benchmarks against company standards, and hygiene checks on whether work is tracked well enough to trust the rest.
Planning Resource planning and project costs, connecting engineering capacity to spend and initiative progress. This is the finance conversation, held with evidence.
Automation Targets, notifications and burnout alerts to Slack, Google Chat or Microsoft Teams, plus the activity heatmap for working rhythms and anomalies.

Pricing

Waydev prices a licence per active contributor with unlimited teams and users inside a plan, so you pay for the engineers you actually track and add licences when you need them. Swarmia also publishes pricing and charges per developer seat, with a free tier below ten developers.2

Switching from Swarmia

1. Prove it on your own repositories The proof of concept runs against your real history, so the comparison uses your numbers rather than a demo tenant.
2. Keep the history you already have Waydev backfills existing version control and issue tracking data, up to 6 months on Pro and 36 months on Premium, so trend lines start immediately.
3. Check the repositories Swarmia could not read If part of your estate sits on Azure DevOps, Gerrit or AWS CodeCommit, connect those first. That is usually where the missing picture was.
4. Plan the rollout with a person A dedicated customer success and adoption team handles onboarding and ongoing use rather than leaving it to a help centre article.

Common questions

Does Swarmia offer on-premise deployment?

No. Swarmia operates as a cloud service. Waydev offers self-hosted and on-premise integrations on the Enterprise plan, which is the single most common reason enterprises move.

Is Swarmia’s data delayed?

No, and we have removed an earlier version of this page that implied otherwise. Swarmia states that its data updates in real time.1 Refresh speed is not a differentiator between these two platforms.

Is SOC 3 a higher certification than SOC 2?

No. A SOC 3 report can only be issued after a clean SOC 2 Type II audit and is a public summary of that same examination.4 Waydev holds SOC 2 Type II and publishes a SOC 3, so our attestation can be shared without an NDA. Swarmia is also SOC 2 Type 2.3 Both are secure platforms and the difference is in how the report is shared.

Why does Waydev show contributor-level data when Swarmia does not?

Because some questions are about a person and cannot be answered at team level, including onboarding progress, review load concentration and knowledge risk. Waydev gates that behind role-based access so it supports managers rather than exposing rankings. Swarmia’s position is that individual data should not exist in the system. Both views are defensible. Yours should decide the tool.

Can we migrate historical data?

Yes. Waydev backfills up to 6 months of history on Pro and 36 months on Premium.

Test it where the gap actually shows

Connect the repositories your current tool cannot read, run the proof of concept, and see whether the picture changes. That comparison takes days, not a procurement cycle.
